This is the story of Caedmon, the first English poet, who lived in the latter half of the 7th century. His story is told by Bede (673-735) in his Ecclesiastical History of England (written in Latin).
Caedmon’s hymn, the only authentic poem Caedmon left, praised God in the heroic tradition of Anglo Saxon poetry because it is a fact that God speaks to each generation in words they will understand.
